I became interested in martial arts in middle school for two reasons. First, I saw a great movie called The Karate Kid (the original). Second, I was dealing with a situation at school that frightened me. I wanted to learn "self-defense." That was why I started, but it was not what kept me coming to class and training.
I guess the main reason I stuck with it was enjoyment. It was a fun activity for me. Like reading. Martial arts practice resonates with me. For some people it is music, or art, or some other sport. It's hard to explain why I enjoy it so much.

One thing I do know. I do not practice martial arts because I am a violent person. Far from it. I am non-confrontational and introverted by nature. I do not like conflict. This is not always a good thing. Sometimes this tendency causes me to avoid talking about things or doing things that I NEED to talk about or do, but neglect. It is a weakness, but also a strength because it informs my martial arts practice.
I teach my students to avoid fighting. Fighting is not self-defense. Fighting is mutually agreed upon physical violence. If you CAN walk/run away and CHOOSE not to, then you are in a fight. Do not do that.
Sometimes the things we do are not for us as individuals but for other people. For example: I joined the United States Marine Corps to serve and protect the USA and Constitution. Example two: My wife had a little girl. I love them both. Now I train in martial arts for enjoyment and to protect my family.
Why martial arts? Train for yourself and for people you love. No, it is not all about me.
