Goals. We are all taught to have them, but few of us have actually learned how to accomplish that task. Setting goals is a skill which can be exercised like any other, and it gets easier with practice.
In his book "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" Stephen Covey said, "Begin with the end in mind." Identify the main goal, then work backwards to accomplish shorter term objectives to reach that goal.
In my classes I go into more depth with the goal setting, and help students work through the process with one or two life goals. This is the broad outline, though, which I use in class.
